Tires may look durable, but they require carefully controlled storage and handling. Poor warehouse conditions, incorrect stacking, inadequate inventory tracking or rough transportation can cause deformation, contamination and avoidable product damage. For manufacturers, distributors, retailers and automotive suppliers, effective tire logistics therefore depends on more than simply finding enough warehouse space.

A specialist tire-logistics operation must protect product quality from the moment tires arrive at the facility until they are delivered to an assembly plant, retailer, service center or end customer.

Why Proper Tire Storage Matters

Tires are manufactured from rubber compounds and other materials whose properties can change depending on environmental and storage conditions. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association warns that unsuitable storage can damage tires and potentially contribute to future failure. Indoor storage is recommended because it offers greater protection from sunlight, ozone, moisture and other damaging conditions.

A properly managed tire warehouse helps businesses:

  • Preserve the condition and uniformity of their inventory
  • Reduce damage, rejection and return rates
  • Maintain accurate production-date records
  • Respond more quickly to recalls or quality investigations
  • Prevent aging inventory from remaining in storage unnecessarily
  • Keep production and distribution schedules moving reliably

1. Maintain the Correct Warehouse Conditions

Tires should generally be stored in a clean, dry and well-ventilated indoor environment with mild, stable conditions. They should be protected from direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture and sources of ozone or chemical exposure.

Tires should also be raised above the warehouse floor using suitable pallets or storage racks. This reduces exposure to moisture and prevents damage from warehouse traffic or uneven surfaces. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association recommends using flat, smooth pallets that are free from protruding nails, sharp edges and damaged components that could mark or puncture the tire.

The warehouse should be regularly inspected for:

  • Water leaks and excessive humidity
  • Damaged racks or pallets
  • Sharp objects and debris
  • Heat-generating equipment near stored inventory
  • Contaminants such as oil, fuel, solvents or chemicals
  • Blocked aisles and unsafe stacking conditions

Specialty and performance tires may have additional requirements, so storage procedures should always reflect the tire manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Use the Right Racking and Stacking Method

Tires should not be placed randomly into large, unstable piles. The correct storage method depends on tire size, construction, expected storage duration, order volume and the way inventory must be picked.

Unmounted tires are commonly stored sidewall to sidewall to help preserve their shape. When tires are stacked horizontally, stack heights must remain controlled because excessive weight can damage the products at the bottom.

Tire warehouses may use several storage methods, including:

Tire Racks

Purpose-designed racks improve inventory organization, increase vertical capacity and make individual tire groups easier to access. Racking must support the tires without placing excessive stress on their sidewalls or beads.

Fishbone Stacking

With fishbone stacking, tires are positioned at alternating angles. This method can provide a stable arrangement for loading, unloading and transporting high volumes of tires.

Laced Stacking

Laced tires are interlocked in a repeating pattern. This can reduce movement during storage or transportation and may be suitable for certain tire sizes and shipment configurations.

Horizontal or “Stovepipe” Stacking

Tires are laid flat and stacked vertically. This is straightforward but requires strict limits on height and weight to avoid instability and pressure damage.

Palletized Storage

Palletized tires can be moved efficiently using material-handling equipment. Pallet quality, tire positioning and load stability must be checked before the pallet is placed into storage.

3. Inspect Tires When They Arrive

Receiving inspections create the first opportunity to identify shortages, transportation damage or manufacturing concerns before affected tires enter available inventory.

The receiving process should verify the shipment against the customer’s documentation and examine the condition of the trailer, pallets and tires. Depending on the contract and product type, inspection may include:

  • Confirming quantities, sizes and product codes
  • Checking beads for cuts, distortion or handling damage
  • Looking for visible warping or deformation
  • Inspecting sidewalls and tread areas
  • Identifying contamination, moisture or foreign material
  • Recording DOT Tire Identification Numbers
  • Scanning serial numbers or unit-level identifiers
  • Categorizing inventory according to customer specifications
  • Photographing and isolating damaged or nonconforming products

Products that fail inspection should be moved to a clearly identified quarantine area. They should not be mixed with approved stock while the manufacturer or customer determines whether they can be released, reworked, returned or disposed of.

4. Track DOT Codes and Individual Tires

Inventory accuracy is particularly important in tire logistics because tire identification data connects products to manufacturing information.

The final four digits of a DOT Tire Identification Number indicate the week and year in which the tire was manufactured. Tracking this information helps warehouse operators manage aging inventory, investigate quality issues and identify potentially affected products during a recall.

A tire warehouse management system should ideally record:

  • Tire size and model
  • SKU or customer product number
  • DOT manufacturing date
  • Serial or unit-level identification
  • Lot or batch information
  • Storage location
  • Quality status
  • Receipt and shipment history

This information should remain connected to the tire throughout receiving, storage, picking and dispatch.

5. Apply FIFO Inventory Rotation

FIFO—or First-In, First-Out—is an essential tire-inventory practice. Tires that have been held for the longest period should generally be distributed first, provided they remain within the customer’s approved specifications.

The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association specifically recommends using tires that have been in stock the longest first.

For tires, FIFO may need to be based on production date rather than simply the date the shipment reached the warehouse. A newer delivery could contain older manufacturing batches, which means receipt-date tracking alone may not provide adequate control.

Warehouse systems should therefore support inventory allocation by DOT date, customer rules and product category. This helps prevent older batches from becoming trapped behind newer inventory.

6. Pick and Load Tires Carefully

Distribution begins with an accurate release from the manufacturer, OEM, distributor or retailer. Warehouse employees must select the correct tires while preserving any required sequencing, DOT-date limitations or quality classifications.

Before loading, the team should verify:

  • Correct tire model and size
  • Required quantities
  • DOT-date range
  • Serial numbers where applicable
  • Customer-specific quality categories
  • Destination and delivery window
  • Trailer cleanliness and condition

The trailer should be free from exposed fasteners, sharp edges, water, oil and contaminants. Tires must then be loaded using an approved method that provides stability without placing damaging pressure on the bead, tread or sidewall.

Tire loading and unloading are highly labor-intensive, so staffing flexibility is another important consideration. A warehouse must be able to increase labor during container arrivals, production surges and high-volume outbound periods without compromising inspection quality or shipment accuracy.

7. Coordinate Warehousing With Transportation

Tire logistics does not end at the warehouse door. Transportation must be coordinated with inventory releases, manufacturing schedules and delivery appointments.
